Featured Influencer: Montreal Photographer Elizabeth Gartside @parfumdefemme

This Week’s Featured Influencer is Elizabeth Gartside, @parfumdefemme.

Elizabeth is a Montréal based photographer whose Instagram gallery consists of compelling, overly exposed snapshots of everyday sights. With a following of over 26,000, she shares how she became a suggested user on Instagram and what her favourite tools are to nail the perfect shot.

Where are you from?

I am from Montréal, Québec.

What were you like as a kid?

As a kid I was always drawing, dancing in front of my mirror, and helping my mother cook. My mother was a pianist and taught me to let my creativity out while I was young. In high school I was the student who created pretty presentations and had nice handwriting. Then when I went to photography school I realized there were other creative people like me. Instead of comparing myself to others, I pushed myself to discover other things such as event coordination, design, mobile photography, video production, and social media marketing.

What were you doing before you started creating?

I was always a creator and I think everyone is in their own way. My first piano lesson took place when I was 3, maybe 4? Since then music, art, photography, cinema, everything seemed so interesting!

How did you get started?

Do you mean Instagram? Well, when my friend got suggested as a user on Instagram I realized there was huge potential of being promoted by the app. Consequently, for an entire year I posted thoughtful pictures to make them all match and have a collective vibe. Putting in effort, not only by removing old stupid pictures and posting “beautiful” pictures, but also by commenting, sharing, liking, and discovering. In other words interact with other users! When I expected it the least I got suggested on Instagram and then everything started.

What are your creative goals?

My creative goal is to never work a day in my life, therefore to always do something that is creative, fun and that allows me to live. I would love to work outside of Montréal and be able to travel with my photography or designs. I have to admit that to be on the suggested users list on Instagram again would also be a goal.

What are your dreams?

My dreams like I said earlier would be to work outside of Montréal and to travel. I also want to have a lovely family in a small house in the forest. I love decoration, therefore another dream would be working in this field, mixed with photography and graphic design.

What inspires you to create?

I don’t know what inspires me to create, I guess I just appreciate everything that surrounds me. I am easily impressed by little stuff and just embrace every moment. I could say that everything leads to creation.

What is your creative process?

My creative process starts as soon as I see something beautiful and just want to capture it. Then it’s to find the perfect composition and then I use VSCO to edit my picture to get a unified aesthetic with the rest of my gallery which has white tones.

What are your favourite tools? Where do you get your best work done?

My favourite tools are my iPhone 6S and the app VSCO. I get my best work done in natural light, mostly in the morning. At this moment the light is just perfect, soft and delicate like the look I want to give to my pictures.

What are some of your favourite places in the world?

I went to Paris last December and it was wonderful. But my dream would be to go to Iceland and take pictures over there. Or Portugal! It seems charming.
