With so much competition out there on Instagram and an ever-changing algorithm, it’s tough getting eyes on your content. Here are our tips for optimizing content to reach your target audience on Instagram.
Use niche-specific hashtags
Generic hashtags like #love and #happy will do nothing for you. Neither will #foodblogger if you’re posting about fashion or #outfitoftheday if you’re posting about food. It’s all about getting down to the nitty-gritty, niche-specific hashtags your target audience is digging around in. The best hashtags typically have 30,000 to 1 million posts.
Write engaging captions
It’s not enough to just use cute emojis or write artsy quotes anymore. The algorithm favors posts that are getting a lot of engagement, and the best way to get that engagement is to write captions people are able to respond to. Ask people how their day is going, or what their favorite song is at the moment!
Fall in Alberta provides one of the most stunning backdrops to experience mornings out on the lake. We had this crazy idea to eat breakfast out on Lake Louise before canoe season came to a close. All of the camping gear from @WoodsCanada helped make that idea a reality, and it kickstarted a day that won’t soon be forgotten. @WoodsCanada has a great assortment of gear to help make your adventures come to life this fall. #WoodsExplorer @hashtagpaid #ad
Post square or portrait photos
Photos taken in a portrait orientation take up more space on a user’s screen (especially on mobile), which makes it harder to miss and more likely that people will engage with your photo. Square photos are great as well, but photos taken in a landscape orientation are a no-no. While some photos are just meant to be landscape, they take so little screen space on Instagram they’re very easy to miss.
Have a “theme”
Maintaining a theme on your feed can be pretty tough, especially if you don’t know where to start. Determine whether your feed is minimal with a lot of white space, or busy with a lot of detail going on. A theme is what makes your feed look cohesive, which makes it look much more polished. You can search up “VSCO themes” on Pinterest for inspiration.
Take inspiration from similar accounts
Find your competitors that are doing it well, and follow their lead. Don’t copy them, but see what’s working for them and implement that into your own content!
I grew up camping. Every year my family made it a priority to go on about four camping trips a year. Everything from a quick overnight in the Muskokas' to an eight day back packing canoe trip across Algonquin. As I got older we stopped going as often and I really started to miss those experiences. This year my friends and I made a pact to go on as many weekend camping trips as we possibly could. Honestly those were the best highlights from the summer. Everything from waking up at 6am to go stand up paddle boarding in Tobermory to cliff jumping in Killarney. I think the biggest thing I'll always appreciate the most from my parents, was instilling a love for adventure, travel and nature in me. Thanks Mom and Dad, you did good 🙂 😊@WoodsCanada #WoodsExplorer #sponsored
